Client Case Study: Marie’s Solar PV System Installation
Meet Marie
Marie lives in a detached dormer bungalow in Blackrock. Her home, originally built in the
1960s, had already undergone a significant retrofit to improve its energy efficiency, including
the installation of a heat pump. However, despite these upgrades, Marie found the heat
pump expensive to run and wanted a more sustainable way to cut down on her electricity
bills and reduce her reliance on the grid. That’s when she decided to invest in a solar PV
system.
The Solar PV System Solution
Marie chose an 8.2kWp solar PV system, designed to produce clean, renewable energy for her home. Here’s a look at the system:
System Size: 8.2kWp
Solar Panels: 20 x Peimar 410W full black panels
Optimizers: 20 x optimizers
Inverter: Huawei 6kW Hybrid Inverter
Battery Storage: Huawei 5kW battery storage module
Installation Date: January 2023
How the Solar PV System Performs
Since the installation, the system has been working hard to generate energy for Marie’s home, and here’s how it’s performed:
Total Energy Generated Annually: 6.53 MWh
Energy Used by the Household (Self-Consumption): 2.95 MWh (45% of the total generation)
Energy Sold Back to the Grid: 3.57 MWh (55% of the total generation)
The overall percentage of the energy generated by the solar system—including both what was used by the household and what was exported to the grid—is approximately 99.8%. This means almost all of the energy generated by the system was either used by the household or sent back to the grid, making it a highly efficient solution for Marie’s energy needs.
Savings & Costs
How Much Has Marie Saved?
Before the solar installation, Marie’s annual electricity bill was €2,124.20. After installing the solar system, her bill has dropped to just €120 a year! Here’s a breakdown of her savings:
Before Solar PV Installation: €2,124.20 per year
After Solar PV Installation: €120 per year
Total Annual Savings: €2,004.20
With the savings on her electricity bills, Marie is projected to recoup the cost of her solar system in around 6-7 years.
What Did It Cost?
Total System Cost (after grant): €14,000
SEAI Grant Received: €2,400 (deducted from the total cost and claimed by IDEAL Solar and Electrical)
Annual Savings: €2,004.20
Payback Period: Approximately 6-7 years
Thanks to the SEAI grant, Marie was able to reduce the upfront cost of her solar system, and with annual savings of over €2,000, she’s well on her way to enjoying energy savings for years to come.
Improved Home Efficiency
One of the added benefits of installing the solar PV system is the improvement in Marie’s Building Energy Rating (BER). The system helped Marie’s home achieve a BER rating of A2, meaning her home is now even more energy-efficient and better for the environment.
Features & Warranties
Marie’s Favourite Feature: The Solar PV App
Marie loves the convenience and control she has with her solar PV system, especially the Solar PV app. This app allows her to:
View live energy generation – Marie can see in real-time how much energy her system is producing.
Monitor energy exports – She can track how much energy is being sent back to the grid and the potential income or savings it generates.
Manage battery storage – The app helps her monitor and manage the battery, ensuring she always has power when needed. It also allows her to fill the battery during the cheaper night rate, so she can make the most of lower electricity prices and maximise her savings.
It’s one of Marie’s favourite features, as it allows her to stay on top of her energy use and make the most of her solar system.
Warranties & Guarantees
Marie’s system is built to last, with:
Solar Panels: 25-year product and performance warranty
Inverter and Battery Storage: 10-year warranty on components
Marie’s Testimonial
“Installing solar PV has been a game-changer for me. My heat pump was expensive to run, and I needed a way to control my electricity costs. The solar system has not only slashed my bills but also made me more energy independent. I love knowing that the power I generate covers most of my household’s needs, and the energy I export helps cover the small bill I still have! The Solar PV app is also fantastic – I can see how much energy I’m generating, managing my battery, and even track how much I’m exporting to the grid!”
Why Solar?
Marie’s experience shows how a solar PV system can help reduce electricity costs, provide energy independence, and make your home more energy-efficient. With a relatively quick payback period and long-term savings, solar power is an investment that makes both financial and environmental sense.
